In our last blog post, we discussed headaches, and what your dentist may be able to do to help you find relief for them. Headaches, a sore jaw, and tooth sensitivity can all be the results of bruxism.

BruxismMany people suffer from bruxism—or frequent grinding of your teeth—and it’s side effects. Bruxism comes in two main forms: sleep bruxism and aware bruxism. Dr. Florian in North Royalton defines both of these below.

Sleep bruxism - This occurs overnight, while you are sleeping. If you grind your teeth during the night, you may wake up with a sore jaw or headaches. You will notice that these symptoms subside as the day goes by.

Awake bruxism - This is the exact opposite of sleep bruxism, if you couldn’t guess. When you wake up, you will not notice any symptoms, but will find them starting to present themselves throughout the day.

If you are grinding your teeth, you are likely causing damage to your teeth. The damage caused by both are very similar; tooth sensitivity and discoloration from your enamel being worn away.

Below, we offer some ways to help reduce your grinding:

1.    Managing your stress is extremely important. Stress is a huge cause of bruxism, so managing your stress may eliminate your problem. Ways to reduce stress include meditation, yoga, and listening to relaxing music.

2.     Stick to a routine sleep schedule.

3.     Remember to have fun, laugh, and enjoy good company.

4.     Eat healthy.

5.     Be conscientious about what you eat before you sleep. Both alcohol and caffeine can cause sleep bruxism.

6.     Last, but not least, you may want to contact your dentist to schedule an appointment. Dentists utilize nightguards to relieve bruxism.

Headaches can come in several forms and can cause a wide variation of pain. On a daily basis, more and more is learned about what exactly causes headaches, and how we can avoid them. Things like hormones, abnormal growths, muscle function, and many other things, are typical causes of headaches. Usually, treatment and prevention of headaches demands the attention of many professionals, including personal care physicians, physical therapists, psychologists, and possibly even your dentist.Headaches North Royalton

Yes, that’s right, your dentist may be able to treat your headaches. Some dentists are trained in caring for jaw joint problems, many are trained in treating headaches, and others do not treat these issues for one reason or another. However, if you suffer from headaches, and have not been successfully treated by your physician who has dismissed medical conditions, you may consider seeking treatment from your dentist. Either your dentist can treat you, or direct you to someone who can.

Unfortunately, many headaches are triggered by long-term spasms in your jaw and neck muscles. There are kinds of "night guards," also known as bite splints, that may be able to offer your jaw some relief. Essentially, these acrylic platforms offer a secure spot for your upper and bottom jaw to shut against and relax your muscles. In fact, it has been approximated that 80% of people clench and/or grind their teeth in their sleep. This condition is known as Bruxism, and can cause "tension headaches" as a result.

If you experience headaches, you may want to consult both your dentist and your personal care physician in the North Royalton area. More likely than not, there is some aid accessible for you.
