As a dental professional, I preach proper oral health habits every day to my patients. You know the drill (no pun intended): brush twice per day for two minutes, floss once per day, use a mouth wash that includes fluoride, and keep your dental visits scheduled every six months. One question that patients often ask me when talking about these habits is: “Will an electric toothbrush help me take better care of my teeth?” While an electric toothbrush cannot hurt, if you are using your manual toothbrush for the proper amount of time and with the proper technique, the results will be the same. The American Dental Association (ADA) has confirmed that your manual toothbrush can be just as effective as an electric toothbrush.
While it is true there are no benefits for the average person, there are groups of people who can benefit from using an electric toothbrush. These groups include the following:
Children - Ask any parent and they will tell you that getting their child to brush properly is nearly impossible. An electric toothbrush will make up for many of their shortcomings. Additionally, children are captivated by electric toothbrushes and will likely result in them brushing longer.
People with braces - Your brackets can keep you from adequately cleaning your teeth. By using an electric toothbrush, it will allow you to clean your teeth in an easier fashion.
People who have diseases - Those who have coordination issues, arthritis, gum disease, diabetes, and other diseases may benefit from an electric toothbrush. Any of these things can hinder a person from properly brushing their teeth, or create a condition where additional cleaning is needed.
No matter what kind of toothbrush to use, remember to change it every three months, and after you have been sick. If you need a cleaning and are in the North Royalton, Ohio area, please contact us today.
