Continuing our series on gum disease, our last blog looked at tartar build up and what can cause this. Besides tartar, what are some other causes of gum disease?
Heredity
Genetics can play a role in the likelihood of gum disease. Those with a family history should schedule regular visits to try and get ahead of it.
Medications
Medication can be a contributor to gum disease.
Poor oral habits
Poor care of teeth and gums can play a role in developing gum disease.
Age
Age also plays a role in developing gum disease.
Diabetes
A link between diabetes and gum disease has been found in studies.
Hormonal Changes
Things such as pregnancy, menopause, and other hormonal changes may be factors in developing gum disease.
Other factors include:
Substance abuse
Tobacco
Poor nutrition
Poor fitting dental work
Although some of these may be out of your control, proper dental hygiene, including brushing and flossing, and regular dental visits are the best ways to fight against gum disease.
