Cosmetic dentistry is growing in popularity, and, one of the most common cosmetic procedures is orthodontics to correct imperfections in your smile. But, did you know that orthodontics is also for functional and health reasons as well? When discussing orthodontics, there are two popular choices: traditional braces and Invisalign.
While both Invisalign and traditional braces are considered orthodontic treatments, they are very different. Traditional braces are made up of wires, brackets, and rubber bands that cannot be removed, and gradually move your teeth. On the other hand, Invisalign is a set of clear trays that are designed to be worn successively over a period of time to correct your smile. Invisalign, as the name suggests, is virtually invisible.
Below, Dr. Florian outlines several advantages that Invisalign offers over traditional braces.
Before offering any advantages of Invisalign, Dr. Florian wants to dispel a common misconception of Invisalign. Many times, patients think Invisalign will be much more expensive than traditional braces. This is usually not true at all. Invisalign and traditional braces are typically very close in price.
Advantage 1: Removable trays
When you have traditional braces, they are in your mouth 24/7 for the duration of your treatment. Due to this, you are limited in the types of food you can eat. With Invisalign, when it comes time to sit down for a meal, you can simply pop your tray(s) out and eat whatever you like. We recommend brushing following your meals.
Advantage 2: Comfort
With traditional braces, you have a mouth full of metal. Unfortunately, this metal has a tendency to poke you and cause discomfort in your mouth. With Invisalign, you don’t have to worry about any poking or prodding from wires or brackets.
Advantage 3: Invisible for every day life
As you go throughout your day wearing Invisalign, people will not be able to tell you are wearing them unless they look very closely at your smile. With braces, it is not hard to see the wires and brackets that cover all of your teeth.
Advantage 4: Easier hygiene
If you opt to receive Invisalign, they will be much easier to keep clean than traditional braces. Additionally, cleaning your teeth is much easier with Invisalign. When it comes time to brush, floss, and use mouthwash, you simply pop your tray out and clean your teeth. With traditional braces, brushing is much harder, and people usually don’t even attempt to floss while wearing braces. This can lead to many oral health issues like cavities.
