Happy New Year, everyone. Yes, we are a few weeks late on that, but want to wish everyone a wonderful 2017! In addition to this, we want to offer a few health tips to help you be healthier in the new year.
1) Try to quit smoking (help a loved one quit smoking)
This tip may be an obvious one, but we can’t stress the importance enough. According to the CDC, smoking cigarettes is the cause of 480,000 deaths per year, or 1 of every 5 deaths in the US. Smoking is linked to gum disease, tooth discoloration, mouth cancer, and many other harmful diseases. It is important to have a good support system, identify your triggers, and eliminate those triggers.
2) Get a full night’s sleep
Sleeping eight hours per night will help to give you more energy throughout the day, boost your mood, and improve your appearance. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you do not sleep enough, it can lead to obesity and health problems like diabetes.
3) Limit your Caffeine and Sugar Intake
To no one’s surprise, both of these things in excess are not good for our health. Sugar can cause you to have energy highs and lows. People often find themselves having more energy after they cut back on their sugar intake. Additionally, caffeine can overstimulate you and lead to an increase in anger.

As you probably already know, smoking cigarettes is one of the worst habits you can develop. Smoking cigarettes can negatively affect your overall and oral health. Strictly in regards to your oral health, smoking can cause discolored teeth, plaque and tartar build up, and can put you at greater risk of oral cancer.
At Royalton Family Dentistry, we want everyone in the North Royalton area to have the best oral and overall health possible. For this reason, Dr. Florian has outlined some common triggers of smoking and things you may want to eliminate in order to stop smoking.
The most common smoking trigger is related to stress. This means that keeping your stress levels under control could help you eliminate a desire to smoke. Some good ways to decrease your levels of stress include listening to relaxing music, doing some yoga, meditating, or receiving a massage.
Another common trigger is consuming alcohol. If this is the case for you, then we recommend staying away from alcohol. If you are going to be in a situation where you want to drink, make sure there are no cigarettes or other tobacco products available to you.
A third, and final trigger for smoking that Dr. Florian will discuss is the desire to smoke after you have a meal. There are many things you can choose to replace cigarettes, including chewing gum, mints, a snack, or maybe a sweet dessert. We recommend finding what will take the edge off of your smoking trigger and enjoy that instead.
