We know, everyone wants to have a smile they can take pride in. Sadly, not everyone has perfect teeth and have been told alternatives are out of reach. However, there may be hope for you with dental implants! Dental implants give people a great set of teeth and beautiful smile. Dr. Florian has some information for you to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants or not!
The first thing to consider when thinking about dental implants are your gums and jaw bone. If your gums and jaw bone are not healthy enough to undergo the procedure, you will be unable to have dental implants. The best way to determine the health of your gums and jaw bone is to consult your periodontist. If it is found that your gums and jaw bone are healthy enough, you are more than likely a candidate for dental implants. However, below is a list of people who may not be suited:
- Those who are still growing, or minors.
- Women who are pregnant.
- Those who are heavy smokers.
- Those who have diseases like diabetes, heart conditions, immune deficiencies, and more!
If you are a candidate, and choose to undergo implant therapy, your procedure will be performed by an oral surgeon - like a periodontist, who will work with your dentist. Initially, your dentist or his staff will do x-rays and other evaluations in order to determine the best course of action.
After this step, your oral surgeon will place the implants and the healing process will begin. After you implants have healed enough, your new teeth will be placed. The process of receiving dental implants can take six months or more for proper healing and to ensure the procedure was a success. It is important to brush, floss, and use mouthwash in order to maintain proper oral health.
