Do you have pain in your jaw while talking or eating? If so, you may be suffering from a common oral health problem.
TMD is a common disorder that causes pain and dysfunction in your temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
TMJ disorders cause problems in your jaw joint and the muscles that play a role in jaw movement. This system that allows your mouth to open and close in a smooth manner is actually quite complex. Any issues with this can cause you pain and discomfort in your jaw, frequent headaches, and neck pain.
Typically, pain in the jaw will subside and is not serious. However, there are many cases that are serious and will require the attention of your dentist.
TMJ disorders include the following:
• Jaw Dislocation
If you have pain in your jaw, diagnosis and treatment is important. Part of the dental examination includes checking the joints and muscles for tenderness, clicking, popping or difficulty moving. Depending on the diagnosis, the dentist may refer you to a physician or another dentist.
In minor cases, TMD can be treated using relaxants, aspirin, and by using a mouthguard while you sleep. In more serious cases, you may require corrective surgery. Each case is unique and should be treated on an individual basis. Orthodontic treatment, a bite adjustment, and reshaping your teeth may also be viable treatment options.
