Foods and Beverages That Stain Your Teeth

One of the most common questions from my patients in Cuyahoga County is how they can whiten their teeth and brighten their smile. This is because certain products we consume can break down the enamel in our teeth and cause stains. This can be caused by the acidity levels or by artificial food colorings.

Rule of thumb: If it can stain your carpet, it can stain your teeth!

The surface of our teeth have microscopic ridges that trap particles of food that can lead to stains on your teeth. Beverages like coffee, tes, and colas can all lead to a great deal of tooth discoloration. Cola is especially bad due to the high levels of acid which will break down your tooth enamel.

Many processed foods can also cause a lot of staining in teeth. The reason for this is due to the food coloring in these foods. This includes juices, popsicles, candies, sherbert, tomato sauce, and more.

Dr. Florian recommends that you continue good dental habits. These habits should include brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash twice per day. These habits will help you eliminate some of your tooth discoloration and will help you keep your mouth healthy. If you would like to get more serious about your teeth whitening options please consult Dr. Florian.
