Happy New Year, everyone. Yes, we are a few weeks late on that, but want to wish everyone a wonderful 2017! In addition to this, we want to offer a few health tips to help you be healthier in the new year.
1) Try to quit smoking (help a loved one quit smoking)
This tip may be an obvious one, but we can’t stress the importance enough. According to the CDC, smoking cigarettes is the cause of 480,000 deaths per year, or 1 of every 5 deaths in the US. Smoking is linked to gum disease, tooth discoloration, mouth cancer, and many other harmful diseases. It is important to have a good support system, identify your triggers, and eliminate those triggers.
2) Get a full night’s sleep
Sleeping eight hours per night will help to give you more energy throughout the day, boost your mood, and improve your appearance. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you do not sleep enough, it can lead to obesity and health problems like diabetes.
3) Limit your Caffeine and Sugar Intake
To no one’s surprise, both of these things in excess are not good for our health. Sugar can cause you to have energy highs and lows. People often find themselves having more energy after they cut back on their sugar intake. Additionally, caffeine can overstimulate you and lead to an increase in anger.

Being healthy is important to everyone. However, did you know that good overall health and wellness begins with good oral health? This being true, it is important that we exercise good oral health hygiene. It is also important that we teach our children good oral health hygiene so that they can have a healthy mouth and smile.
If your child does not develop good oral hygiene habits, they are at a higher risk of developing cavities and gum disease. Unfortunately, as we age, tooth decay and gum disease can increase our risk of suffering from diseases like diabetes, heart and kidney problems, and many others.
Healthy dental habits should begin as soon as your child’s tooth starts showing through the surface of the gum line. After the tooth is visible, it should be brushed twice per day like you brush your own teeth. As your child continues to develop more teeth, as soon as two teeth are in contact with one another, you should begin flossing their teeth along with the brushing you have been doing. Additionally, you should start scheduling dentist appointments for your child roughly 6 months after their first tooth has arrived.
Unfortunately, getting your child to brush is an extremely difficult task. Whether it be that your child doesn’t want to brush twice per day, or only spends 15 seconds brushing and then is done, children rarely brush as they should. Dr. Florian addressed this problem by offering some helpful hints to get your child to brush properly. That article can be found, here. If you are looking for a good dentist to bring your child/children to, Dr. Florian is always welcoming new patients, and is looking forward to getting your child on track to a lifetime full of healthy smiles.
